The City of Edinburgh Council has taken possession of its newest school with the official handover of Queensferry High.

The £40m school has been delivered by Hub South East in partnership with Morrison Construction and incorporates shared community facilities such as a six-lane swimming pool and a sports hall.

Designed by Ryder Architecture the new school has a capacity for 1,200 pupils with flexible spaces including a multi-functional assembly hall, with retractable seating permitting it to double as a theatre for drama and film screenings. In addition, the home economics, dining and art departments have also been positioned to be accessible by the community out of hours.

Councillor Ian Perry, city convener for Education, Children and Families, said: "I'm sure the pupils and staff can't wait to get into their new school next week especially after the disruption caused to learning and teaching by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"It will provide high quality, modern facilities for pupils and teaching staff, and features a low carbon design which will deliver energy efficiencies. The school will also provide much-needed community facilities and many of the areas will be easily accessible to the public."

Built on the site of the previous school's playing fields attention will now turn to the demolition of the old building to accommodate an additional sports pitch and landscaping.
